Recently in the news there was a story of a commercial brewery having a large amount of stock stolen from a storage premises in Petone. From that it appeared it wasn’t just the loss of the actual beer and the cost of that but the inconvenience and loss of the specialised kegs the beer was stored in. When a business is burgled or suffers loss through other means such as staff or customer theft it can impact on the business in a number of ways.

  • Financial loss
  • Cashflow issues
  • Product loss
  • Damage of loss of tools & equipment
  • Damage or loss of business or confidential records
  • Health & Safety issues

As a business owner you take risks in order to run your business and that more than likely will flow through to your personal life either in a good or a bad way. Proper security can help negate at least some of that risk and help you sleep better at night.

First Step

The first step is a proper alarm covering your points of access and any particularly sensitive areas such as an office where records or cash may be kept. That alarm should be regularly serviced and the codes for accessing that controlled so that only those staff who need to can control it. When they leave that code should be deleted.

Pair that with professional monitoring, not only will that ensure a response if the alarm activates but also allow you to check via their records who set or unset the alarm and at what time.

A quality security camera system allows you to keep an eye on what is happening in the business either while you are on site or elsewhere via a remote viewing application. Good quality images can help with

  • Staff or customer theft
  • Planning see where customers go in the shop and what are your busy times
  • Staff training
  • Health & Safety

A lone worker alarm can help protect staff and fulfil your responsibilities under Health & Safety whether they are on site or out and about.

Pay attention to physical surroundings cut back bushes around the premises and look at installing security lights and proper locks.

One of the frustrating things about dealing with security is that it is often event driven i.e. Monday “I don’t see a need I’ve never had a problem”, Tuesday “I’ve been burgled when can I get an alarm in?”.
